USDA provides emergency assistance to producers of honeybees

US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that disaster assistance will be issued starting today to livestock, honeybee and farm-raised fish producers that suffered losses in 2008 because of disease, adverse weather or other conditions. Vilsack said. “The assistance announced today will be particularly helpful to beekeepers whose bees suffered from Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and will also assist other producers facing economic challenges.”

US Department of Agriculture begins survey of honeybee colonies in 13 states

Concerned US Agriculture Department officials on Monday announced the start of an ambitious survey of honeybee colonies in California and a dozen other states. "There has been a disturbing drop in the number of U.S. bee colonies over the last few years, while the demand for commercial bee pollination services continues to grow," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said. California's almond crop alone requires more than 1.4 million colonies of bees annually, amounting to more than half of all bees in the United States. The survey of 320 apiaries, though, is not a census of the total bee population. Instead, it will focus on mortality and troublemakers. Specialists from the Agricultural Research Service and Pennsylvania State University will collect bees and debris from selected apiaries. An acutely detailed, 22-page set of instructions specifies every step of the operation. So far, scientists have not identified a single cause for the population decline. Potential culprits include new microbes or viruses, pesticides and environmental stress. Agriculture Department scientists say cell phones aren't a problem, despite earlier speculation.

Feeling the sting - If bees continue to disappear, US keepers may decide to shut down

Managed bee colony deaths in the U.S. rose to about 34 percent this year, up from 29 percent last year, according to the ARS, the chief scientific research agency for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The number of managed honey bee colonies has shrunk from about 5 million in the 1940s to about 2.5 million today."If the rate of these losses continues, commercial beekeeping may not be economically viable," said Kim Kaplan, a spokeswoman for the ARS. "If they are not making a profit, they're not going to stay in the business."

Nieuw EU-laboratorium moet bijenstand in kaart brengen

Fears for crops as shock figures from America show scale of bee catastrophe

The Guardian, 1 May 2010
The world may be on the brink of biological disaster after news that a third of US bee colonies did not survive the winter
Disturbing evidence that honeybees are in terminal decline has emerged from the United States where, for the fourth year in a row, more than a third of colonies have failed to survive the winter.

Bees are heading for extinction

Some experts believe bees are heading for extinction. More than three million colonies in America and billions of bees worldwide have died since 2006. U.S. scientists have found 121 different pesticides in samples of bees, wax and pollen, increasing fears that pesticides are a key problem.

Bees and flowers have co-evolved for more than 10 million years

Flowers benefit from pollination while the bees are rewarded with pollen and nectar. Successful pollination typically increases fruit set, resulting in higher yields of better-formed, larger, more flavourful fruit that ripens faster and lasts longer. Just a few things that benefit from honey bee pollination: cherries, pears, apples, apricots, plums, filberts, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, kiwi fruit, black currants, pumpkins, squash, melons, beans, cucumbers, selected vegetables being grown for seed, canola, mustard, clovers, sainfoin, bird’s-foot trefoil, plus many flowers and herbs.

$44M in crops in Ohio threatened by high honeybee deaths through winter

An estimated 50 to 70 percent of hives kept by beekeepers died, said Cindy Kalis, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The losses are in keeping with heavy fatality rates experienced since 2006 — a year when 600,000 bee colonies in the U.S. mysteriously fled their homes and disappeared, said James Tew, Ohio State University’s state honeybee specialist. Bees annually pollinate Ohio crops worth $44 million, including berries, fruits and vegetables.

Bijendeskundige: ‘Laakbare fouten in recent onderzoek bijensterfte’

Bee Killer Still at Large; New Evidence Makes Pesticides a Prime Suspect

Scientists found 121 different types of pesticides in bee colonies

This spring, many beekeepers across America opened their hives and found ruin within. At a time when they should have been buzzing with activity, the hives were half-empty, with most adult bees having flown off to die. A new federal survey indicates that 2010 has been the worst year so far for bee deaths. Another study suggests that pesticides might be to blame for the mass wipeout of adult honeybees.

A national conservation organization has filed a notice of intent to sue the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to adequately regulate nearly 400 pesticides for their effect on threatened and endangered species.

Dave Hackenberg (US commercial beekeeper): 'This winter could be the worst yet'

The man credited with discovering colony collapse disorder, a strange phenomenon in which workers bees suddenly desert the hive — that has wiped out more than a third of all honeybees in the US — says this winter could be the worst yet.

Help the honeybees, which are essential to our lives

By Reese Halter, Ph.D. • January 7, 2010

Over the past three years, more than 50 billion honeybees have died. Scientists understand the causes, and now we need everyone to lend a helping hand.

Judge Revokes Approval of Pesticide That Could Harm Bees

NEW YORK, New York, January 4, 2010 (ENS) – A pesticide approved just 18 months ago must be taken off the market because it could be toxic to America's honey bees, already in steep decline.

Deflectoren op maiszaaiers verplicht

AGD.nl 05 jan 2010 14:43

Missing bees

Paul Monaghan, Manchester, UK, The Co-operative

In their article "The truth about the disappearing honeybees" Marcelo Aizen and Lawrence Harder make withering mention of the film Vanishing of the Bees , and go on to assert that there is no pollination crisis (24 October, p 26). Yet no one has so far been able to demonstrate with any confidence what is behind the decline in honeybee numbers in Europe and North America.
